Letter to the People

Greetings fellow Americans: Housewives, family men, working men and women, doctors, lawyers, social servants, social activists, manufacturers, food service people, small business owners, clergy people, and (dare I say) politicians – all patriots. I hope this letter finds you all in good health and high spirits despite the trying times. This letter is not meant to reprimand you, nor is it meant to necessarily propagandize the movement that (for many people) began with a 2008 campaign for the presidency – a movement now being hijacked and bastardized by “conservative” radio talk show hosts and talking heads on television – but I digress…

It is my hope that this letter might help convey my personal feelings toward you in light of our nation’s current condition, and how we might better work together to correct our waylaid federal government. It is my understanding and common belief among most people that communication is key when cooperation is needed. We must all be on the same page and humming a similar tune if any real progress is to be made to restore our country. Please do not misunderstand me. I am in no way saying that every person should hold exactly the same moral beliefs or have exactly the same political agenda. My friends, this is what makes America great - the fact that this country is a melting pot of indignant and idealistic people and was founded by people of the same sort. Let us together attempt to reconnect with the founding of our country, within which we will find warnings relevant to issues we face today.

The Constitution of the United States of America – a contract between the government and the people, flawless in its meanings and unique in its spirit to convey those meanings – is constantly bastardized to legitimize otherwise unconstitutional actions, that is, if it is not completely ignored altogether. Our government, a federal constitutional republic, is a government designed for balance. No individual may hold executive, legislative, and judicial powers collectively. However, it is the nature of government to want to grow, and be more influential – more centralized. It is a curse that our Constitution was designed to oppose. And this is why our Constitution is so often overlooked, or its checks and balances simply bypassed via executive order – because it is a major thorn in the side of big government proponents on either side of the aisle.

Thus we arrive at the fundamental reason for the issues we are having with our economy, foreign policy, educational, and healthcare systems. Government intervention. Or at least too much government involvement. I am convinced that if we were to reverse even some of the federal government regulations in the above areas, we would be in a better place. But first we have to come to an understanding. An understanding missed by many who voted in the last presidential election. The understanding I speak of is the fact that our federal government is out of control. It takes our tax dollars and spends them unwisely. Or it takes our tax dollars and then prints more dollars itself so it can fund another program we apparently cannot live without, or a war or two that simply must happen because these sovereign countries do not want our military or corporations setting up shop within their borders. Our government presumes that its own citizens cannot take care of themselves or each other, that it should “legally” steal from its people to give to others, that Congress can delegate its power to declare war to the President, that it is up to the federal government to protect businesses despite bad business practices, that the government itself should function more like a business so that it can both regulate and compete in a supposedly free-market economy that includes the healthcare industry. Our out of control federal government is a joke. And it is not just the President and it is not just Congress who are to blame. You are to blame, and I am too.

My friends, a movement has been growing and gaining momentum for some time. Some call it the Revolution, and it echoes the policies of the Founding Fathers – small constitutional government, individual liberty, sound money, and a noninterventionist foreign policy. These are policies that ought to span party lines. These policies are about being responsible with the resources the American people have to give, and being accountable to the American people as to how their resources are being used. Thomas Jefferson said, “Educate and inform the whole mass of people... They are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty." We can see now how Jefferson was right. It is essentially our job to criticize government when it does something not in accordance with the Constitution. We have failed to do so, and now here we are. Fighting two wars, thinking about how we might have to fight another, our government is broke and in debt with the money it takes from us, our currency is worthless, social policy is broadly dictated by single court of unelected judges in Washington, and all the while we are suppose to be comforted knowing our government will somehow magically find a way to bail out failing companies and provide affordable healthcare to all of us. It does not make any sense. It does not have to make sense as long as we believe the federal government has the right, wisdom, and capacity to control every facet of our lives. From healthcare to what businesses will succeed and which will fail. Liberty is the answer. Let us - the people - decide the fate of such things as we were meant to. I only ask you to open yourselves up to the notion that maybe things are tough because we have let it be so. That we have allowed our politicians to take government too far. That we have given those who we elect to serve us too much liberty as to stray far from the original intentions of our Founding Fathers.

I want to announce that I am starting a small blog. Yes another political blog, and they are a dime a dozen these days. Every so often I plan to post articles on various topics coming from a Constitutional perspective. I invite any of you who are reading this letter to contribute articles as well. Just send them to me and I will post them for you on my Facebook and my blog at Blogspot.com (http://pintandfellowstavern.blogspot.com). All articles will be shared on websites like Reddit.com and Digg.com as well.

Let the discussion begin. Unity through individualism, prosperity through independence, liberty through enlightenment. Peace be with you.
